We have heard of the Ice Bucket Challenge. A great success, more in raising money than in raising awareness about those suffering from ALS. Regardless, a commendable initiative. Until a few months ago I didn't know anyone with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), until Ricardo told me he was diagnosed with this brutal disease.
Ricardo and I graduated from RISD Architecture in 1986. After, I lost contact with him until we met for lunch, with his wife Linda and my wife Yana at Beyoglu, NYC three months ago. I was very excited to see Ricardo after 28 years and reconnect, sure we did. Over lunch he told me about his diagnosis, it shocked me deeply. But Ricardo has always been a fighter, he finished lunch explaining what he wanted to do - to be healed from the fatal disease. He told me about the healing event / recording session him and Linda were planning to host and the song he was going to write - the song now playing. On July 19, 2014 eighty of his friends and family members came together to share, dine, and record Perfect World. The photographs below capture moments of this magical reunion.
For me Ricardo is still "Chamo" (a Venezuelan slang - this is how we called each other in college). A young, energetic, incredibly creative, and above all - a courageous and loving man. That is the Ricardo I knew in college. Later, I followed his successful trajectory as architect in LA, adventurous sailor embarked to sail the world, and a passionate musician with his first album release in December 2012. And now, when things would seem as if the sky is falling, Ricardo takes the challenge to be healed with a remarkable spiritual attitude. It is impossible to recreate what took place at Water Recording Studios and the profound effect it had on me. I'm grateful to be one of 80 people that assisted the event. Thank you Ricardo and Linda... Perfect World Celebration was a sublime healing event.
